Mad About Manners

A Lifeskills Approach to Teaching Manners

by Cathleen Hanson and Carol Campbell Haislip

"The great secret...is not having bad manners or good manners or any other particular sort of manners, but having the same manners for all human souls. In short, behaving as if you were in Heaven where there are no third-class carriages, and one soul is as good as another."
     -George Bernard Shaw

Whether it be at home, in the classroom, on the job, or on the sporting field, manners matter. In fact, research has shown that many acts of violence can be traced to a single incidence of rudeness. By giving individuals a set of rules by which to live, it can build confidence and help to avoid many of the circumstances which can lead to acts of aggression.

Mad About Manners is a teaching guide which addresses social skills, communication skills, table manners and character building. It includes such topics as: Greetings and Introductions, Acts of Kindness, Host and Guest Behaviors, Telephone Etiquette, Conversation Skills, Table Settings, and Dining Etiquette. It is an easy-to-read manual for anyone wanting to teach manners to children, teens, young adults, adults, and/or underestimated youth.

Each chapter contains activities or discussion topics designed to enhance the participants' learning experiences. Not only do the activities reinforce the skills, but they make the classes fun and interesting. The workbook is forty-one pages long and contains nine reproducible handouts for class use.

Here is what one of our users had to say about the manual:

"We loved your manual!  We used about four different resources but your training manual completely organized our presentation for us.  We had one hour to teach and execute practice with 59 thirteen and fourteen year olds! We knew we had to engage them quickly and your format helped us do that.  By the time we got to practice these kids were filled with enthusiasm and their faces beamed as they practiced introductions and greeting with priests, teachers and parents.  We could see some of them increasing in confidence by the time they reached the final introductions--happily making direct eye contact and flashing radiant smiles."  From Anne, North Ridgeville, OH
